Selena Gomez Confirms Beloved Taylor Swift Track Is About Their Longtime Friendship

Selena Gomez has confirmed one of Taylor Swift’s sweetest songs is about her, and Swifties everywhere are shouting, “We knew it!”
While appearing on the sophomore episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Gomez sat down for a candid chat with the three hosts: her husband, Benny Blanco, rapper Lil Dicky and Lil Dicky’s wife, Kristin Batalucco. Delving into everything from her impressive career to her dreamy wedding day, the conversation eventually turned to Gomez’s longstanding friendship with Swift, including a revelation about a certain song from the artist’s Evermore album.
Gomez opens up about friendship with Swift
At around the hour mark of the episode, Lil Dicky broached the subject of the Eras Tour superstar, prompting Gomez by stating, “You’re a big Taylor Swift music fan, I feel like.” The Rare Beauty founder quickly responded, assuring the host her love for the artist goes well beyond just her catchy catalogue, saying, “Well, I’m a big Taylor fan. I’m a stan for life, for sure.”
Gomez and Blanco then told a story about a thoughtful gift she’d received from Swift for her 30th birthday—a handmade piece of artwork commemorating their friendship—as well as Swift’s love of baking bread and sharing it with close friends. From there, Batalucco and Lil Dicky spoke about music in general and the connections it creates, saying that Gomez clearly “connected with [Swift’s] music on a different level,” which resulted in Gomez revealing a fact Swifties have been speculating about for years.
“Well, ‘Dorothea’ is about me—one of her songs. And I feel like a lot of moments, huge moments, that were self-defining, from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between, we were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18,” Gomez said. “And we didn’t really know what was going on, [but] we've never seen each other any differently. So when I listen to it, I’m so impressed by how it’s eloquently put.”
Gomez went on to refer to another Swift track written about their friendship, “Family,” an unreleased song from Swift’s Reputation album, noting that the lyrics predicted their flourishing careers, with Gomez now in films and Swift selling out stadiums on tour. “Now, when I listen to that song, it makes me want to cry. Both of those things have happened for us, and that’s really sweet.”

Swifties rejoice in the comments
As expected, Swifties were beyond excited to see their longtime theory about the meaning behind “Dorothea” confirmed, taking to the comment section on the podcast’s YouTube channel to share their thoughts.
“As a Swiftie who has always assumed that ‘Dorothea’ is about Selena, I love this confirmation!️” One fan wrote
“Love hearing the story about Taylor’s lyrics having a deeper meaning to Selena,” another user added. “That’s some powerful stuff.”
“Omg getting the ‘Dorothea’ lore along with this being the funniest most wholesome gathering is peak,” one commenter concurred.
And we’d absolutely have to agree with that sentiment! Now, please excuse us while we give the wildly underrated Evermore album more of the love and affection it deserves.
