‘The Voice: Battle of Champions’ Episode 7 Live Recap: Who Was Eliminated?

While everyone else suffers from a classic case of the Mondays, fans of NBC’s The Voice: Battle of Champions are rejoicing as they get comfortable on the couch for another new episode.
This week, we saw the championship-level coaches—Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and John Legend—and their teams take on the second “Knockout Round,” narrowing down their original teams of 10 to the final three members apiece. But that’s not all the drama that was in store for this evening, as the show also introduced the first-ever All-Star Showdown.
Last week’s shocking Knockout Round
As noted above, the first Knockout Round was one for the books, with the competition losing another crop of talented singers. This time, the contestants were tasked with picking their own tune (as opposed to the Battle Rounds, where the coaches chose the music for them), which helped highlight who might be stage-ready and who needed a little more time to hone their voice.
And of course, there were plenty of celebrity friends on hand to help the coaches get their teams ready for battle, with CeeLo Green mentoring both Levine and Legend’s teams, while Michael Bublé was there to mentor Clarkson’s team. There were also no “Steals” or “Saves” for this round, meaning the coaches’ final calls were, indeed, final.

The teams this week + the All-Star Showdown rules
After six head-to-head rounds last week, six competitors were eliminated in total, two from each team. This left the coaches with four singers apiece going into tonight. Before the start of tonight’s episode, the teams were as follows:
Team Kelly
- Liv Ciara (Winner of Knockout Round 1 against Abigayle Oakley)
- J.W. Griffin (Winner of Knockout Round 1 against Houston Kelly)
- Jonah Mayor
- Mikenley Brown
Team Adam
- Alexia Jayy (Winner of Knockout Round 1 against Bay Simpson)
- Jeremy Keith (Winner of Knockout Round 1 against Mike Steele)
- Jaali Boyd
- Jared Shoemaker
Team John
- Lucas West (Winner of Knockout Round 1 against Moses G.)
- Syd Millevoi (Winner of Knockout Round 1 against Natasha Blaine)
- K.J. Willis
- Grace Humphries
As noted above, tonight will also mark the show’s first-ever All-Star Showdown. According to NBC, “each of the three coaches got to bring back two artists they’d worked with during past seasons to battle it out on stage on their behalf.”
Jared Shoemaker vs. Jaali Boyd
Boyd selected “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie for her performance, revealing that she deeply related to the lyrics. Levine applauded the choice, calling it a “smart move.” Meanwhile, Shoemaker chose “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde” by Travis Tritt, saying it was the perfect mixture of country and rock to showcase his voice.
Following the showdown, Clarkson said Boyd’s voice was her favorite, but she preferred Shoemaker’s song choice. Legend agreed, but still noted he’d choose Boyd overall. After all was said and done, Levine selected Shoemaker to move forward, saying he did the best of the two “today.”
WINNER: Jared Shoemaker
Grace Humphries vs. KJ Willis
Willis chose Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” for his Knockout Round performance, while Humphries selected “I Don’t Want to Wait” by Paula Cole. Legend was initially concerned about Willis’s connection to the crowd, saying it felt like he was “reciting” the song instead of performing it. On the other hand, Green enjoyed Humphries’s song choice, saying he was “in love” with her sound.
Clarkson literally stood up in the middle of Willis’s rendition, giving him a standing ovation. Levine was also impressed, adding that he loved Humphries’s unique style. Legend felt both did a great job, but ultimately pushed Willis through to the semifinals.
WINNER: KJ Willis
Jonah Mayor vs. Mikenley Brown
Mayor opted to sing “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan for his Knockout Round performance, citing his mother as the reason he wanted to sing it. Meanwhile, Brown chose “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan, telling the coaches about how she related to its lyrics about the importance of being yourself.
Levine said he loved Mayor’s “character,” while he loved Brown’s song choice. Legend agreed with Levine, but didn’t care for Mayor’s song choice, saying he’d choose Brown. Clarkson said Mayor was “special,” while Brown was “cool and interesting,” choosing to move her forward.
WINNER: Mikenley Brown
ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN
Following the three final Knockout Round performances came the aforementioned All-Star Showdown. It was also revealed that whichever coach won the showdown would earn an extra finalist in the semifinal round, giving them an extra edge. Green was also brought out as the judge for the showdowns, given that it would be unfair to leave it up to the coaches.
Girl Named Tom vs. Renzo
Clarkson selected the Season 21 champions, Girl Named Tom, to represent her in the first round. She then decided to go against Team Legend, with Legend choosing Renzo—who came in the top three of Season 27—to face the group. The former chose to sing “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas, while the latter took on “Dream On” by Aerosmith.
WINNER: Girl Named Tom
Maelyn vs. Jordan Smith
Up next, Legend selected Maelyn—the winner of Season 16— to follow Renzo, and she sang “Fields of Gold” by Sting for her All-Star Showdown selection. The singer was pitted against Team Levine, with the coach choosing Season 9 champion Smith to go against Maelyn. Smith sang “Chandelier” by Sia.
WINNER: Maelyn
Jake Hoot vs. Javier Colón
For the final performances of the evening, Season 1 champion Colón for Team Levine went against Season 17 winner Hoot for Team Clarkson. The former sang “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper—which he sang for his original Blind Reveal—while the latter selected “Desperado” by The Eagles.
WINNER: Jake Hoot—meaning Team Clarkson won the All-Star Showdown!
