Padma Lakshmi Uses Fourth of July Cake Designs to Share Timely Political Commentary

The 2023 SI Swimsuit model spoke out on Instagram ahead of the holiday.

Writer, television personality and activist Padma Lakshmi is not afraid to use her platform for good. While the Taste the Nation creator regularly shares snippets from her Hulu program and other lifestyle content with her 1.4 million followers, Lakshmi took a political approach with her July 3 post.

The 52-year-old shared a thoughtful message alongside three photos of patriotic cakes over the years. In the first, she and her daughter, Krishna, posed in the kitchen with a sheet cake decorated with strawberries and blueberries to mimic the American flag. In the second, Lakshmi held a round dessert that read, “Separate Church & State” in red and blue icing. The final sweet treat was a red, white and blue pie with “Close the Camps” written in pie crust cut-out letters.

“Some of my favorite 4th cakes through the years. No time for baking this weekend-- I'm off traveling again, and frankly burnt out from the last few months of recipe testing the #TasteTheNation cookbook 🙃 ,” she wrote in her caption. “Not even sure what this year's cake would say... ‘drag is not a crime?’ or maybe just ‘SAY GAY’ in big bold berries??”

Plenty of Lakshmi’s followers chimed in to the comments section with similar and supportive sentiments.

“The separation of church and state cake is feeling very 2023 🇺🇸,” Cindi Leive noted.

“‘Say Gay in Big Bold Berries’ is my new motto,” another follower applauded.

“Drag is not crime cake 👏👏👏,” someone else echoed.
