The secret is out. American model Hunter McGrady has revealed exactly how she achieves her glamorous night-out curls. It’s not about heat for the 30-year-old (haven’t you heard? We’re leaving damaged hair in 2023).

Rather, it’s all about nostalgia and leaning into childhood trends, which—as it turns out—really do work well and in a manner that’s better for your hair than traditional heat-centered methods. She uses those velcro, self-grip rollers that we have fond memories of putting in our hair as children, just to pretend. Little did we know then, they’re actually incredibly useful.

“Fun fact: I used to use hot rollers or Velcro rollers every morning in high school! I keep seeing people do these velcro rollers and had to give it a go 15 years later.. they still got that magic!!” McGrady said of her return to the age-old method. “Hot tip: do this first and THEN your makeup! The longer they are in the more volume.”

The model does use just a little bit of heat to form the foundation for the velcro curler to work its magic. In an Instagram reel where she demonstrated her method, she curled each section with a wand first, then rolled it up toward her scalp. But, we’ve seen it done without. Up to you!

Now that we know they’re actually effective, we’re really finding ourselves inspired to follow in McGrady’s footsteps with rollers. If you’re feeling similarly, we’ve found the perfect starter pack for cheap.
