Hilary Duff Drops Music Video for ‘Roommates,’ Says It’s About ‘When Life Is Life-ing’

Wake up, babe! Hilary Duff dropped a new single, and we’ve already got it on repeat.
The singer-actress released “Roommates” on streaming platforms on Thursday, Jan. 15, and the brand-new music video for the song premiered on YouTube at 7 p.m ET the same day. Duff originally teased the track in a Jan. 7 Instagram post, and though fans had to wait just over seven days to stream it, it was well worth the anticipation.
“Roommates is a song about when life is life-ing, babe,” Duff wrote in an Instagram caption promoting the track yesterday. “It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time - before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs and letting old or new insecurities slip in. It’s the restless hum of wanting to find your way back - to your rhythm, to your person, to yourself.OUT NOW ✨🩵🛏️.”
The reel featured a quick snippet of the music video, directed by Matty Peacock, and as of press time, has racked up more than 173,000 likes and plenty of comments from Duff’s adoring fans.
“You crushed so hard ba 🧡,” husband Matthew Koma gushed.
“OMG YES YES YES!!!! THANK YOU @hilaryduff THE QUEEN OF EVERYTHING!!!! Making music good again!!💛💛💛💛,” one follower cheered.
“IT 👏 IS 👏 PERFECTION 👏 absolutely crushed it babe 🔥,” friend and author Gaby Dalkin added.
“This is an absolute masterpiece and so good! Everything about this video and song is brilliant. ✨💖,” talk show host Paolo Presta stated.
“Go Hil GO!!!!” pal and fellow singer-actress Mandy Moore wrote.
Last November, Duff released “Mature,” her first single in 10 years. Both singles will be featured on the 38-year-old’s forthcoming album, luck... or something, which drops on Feb. 20, 2026. The album is available for pre-order here.
luck... or something will be Duff’s sixth studio album, as her last project, Breathe In. Breathe Out., was released in 2015. She told Vogue last November that she always knew she would return to music, and after a decade away, she was finally ready.
“I always knew I would be back at some point, but I didn’t have a running note on my phone until I started seriously talking with Matt [Duff’s husband] about what new music might sound like,” she told the outlet. “Now that I have 10 more years of life experience under my belt, I really feel like I have something to say and that I have a safe space to do it. To be 38 and have built a family that looks the way I always dreamed it would, I feel like I can step away and take some time to do this for myself. I’ve had a forward-facing life for such a long time, but I’m ready to connect with people again on a level that feels authentic to who I am now. It feels like a victory lap.”
