Angel Reese has added another award to her prolific professional résumé, and this time the honor came off the hardwood.

On Monday night, the Chicago Sky forward was named the Sportswoman of the Year at the BET Awards. With her third consecutive win in the category (following 2023 and 2024 honors), Reese joined fellow athlete and SI Swimsuit model Serena Williams as the only athletes to ever secure the coveted title three times.

The full list of nominees included Juju Watkins, Sha’Carri Richardson, A’ja Wilson, Claressa Shields, Coco Gauff, Dawn Staley, former LSU teammate Flau’jae Johnson and fellow SI Swimsuit model Simone Biles. Meanwhile, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts took home the award for Sportsman of the Year.

Reese’s latest accolade came just 24 hours before the former All-Star was deemed the quickest WNBA player ever to notch 30 double-doubles. The sophomore recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds during Tuesday night’s matchup with the New York Liberty, where the Sky ultimately fell 85-66.

Speaking with the media in a postgame press conference, Reese addressed the box score along with her accomplishment from Monday night. She also had high praise for fellow nominee Coco Gauff, who, fresh off a title win at the Roland-Garros Final, sat courtside in Brooklyn to watch the Commissioner’s Cup game.

“As a young Black woman, I’m super inspired by everything [Gauff] does,” Reese complimented. “To see her show up to a WNBA game obviously shows how much she supports women [...] and I just hope she continues to just be her.”

Additionally, the 23-year-old also addressed her three-time BET Award honor, which she unfortunately received some criticism for on social media from fans, as well as fellow nominee Claressa Shields.

“Obviously, it really meant something to other people today because it’s me,” Reese stated. “I just focus on basketball. I come into work every day and work. I don’t complain. I don’t care about anything else [...] That’s all I want to do is just come to work and be able to enjoy my job.”

Fellow teammate and veteran guard Ariel Atkins also came to Reese’s defense amidst the controversy.

“This is a 23-year-old kid who handles herself with grace. Her crown is heavy,” Atkins said. “She has to have [a] wall [up], because if she doesn’t, people will break her down—not only just because of the way she looks, but because of the way she carries herself [...] And we ain’t gonna break her down for that.”
