The actress was finishing up her final weeks of college when she received the script.

Ginny & Georgia wouldn’t be the same without Antonia Gentry’s portrayal of 16-year-old high school student Ginny Miller. On a recent episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actress revealed that she almost didn’t audition for the role after the script appeared in her inbox at the end of senior year.

“I was in the middle of finals week at university. I was trying to graduate. It was really difficult. I barely did,” the 25-year-old explained. “And I get it in my inbox, the audition. And I almost didn’t audition for it because I thought I was going to fail out of school.”

She added the the script was just too good to pass up and it was worth a try.

“I really connected to the character in a way that I hadn’t before for any roles. And I knew that if I didn’t audition, I would regret it. So I did,” she continued. “And then a couple weeks after graduating, I was flying back and forth six different times to L.A. to do chemistry reads. And yeah, I clearly do not regret it.”

Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia followed the success of the first 10-episode drop in February 2021. It immediately made its way to No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 within three days of its Jan. 5 release.

Fallon asked Gentry why the show has resonated with so many people from different demographics.

“I think there’s really just something for everyone in the show. It’s really lighthearted and fun, but it’s also very real,” Gentry said. “We have such a diverse group of characters with different experiences. There’s a character for everyone to really latch on to.”

Brianne Howey—who plays Ginny’s mother, Georgia, in the show—agreed.

“It touches so many subjects and it’s incredibly authentic,” Howey said.
