Dionne Warwick once gave Snoop Dogg a scolding over his misogynistic lyrics. The rapper, who was born Calvin Broadus, recalled a meeting he attended at the legendary vocalist’s house in the 1990s along with Suge Knight, Tupac Shakur and other rap artists. While they were asked to be there at 7 a.m., they all showed up approximately 10 minutes early out of fear.
“We were the most gangsta as you could be, but that day at Dionne Warwick’s house, I believe we got out-gangstered,” the “Drop it Like It’s Hot” singer said in the new CNN Films documentary, Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over. "We’re powerful right now, but she’s been powerful forever. Thirty-some years in the game, in the big home with a lot of money and success.”
Upon arrival, Warwick asked the men to call her a bi---h to her face they way they so often described women in their lyrics.
“These kids are expressing themselves, which they’re entitled to do,” explained Warwick, who is known for her hilarious and blunt Twitter presence. “However, there’s a way to do it.”
Snoop Dogg—who now has three adult sons, Cordé, Cordell and Julian, and a daughter named Cori—said the lecture changed his approach to making music.
“You guys are all going to grow up,” Warwick scolded the group of ’90s artists. “You’re going have families. You’re going to have children. You’re going to have little girls, and one day that little girl is going to look at you and say, ‘Daddy, did you really say that? Is that really you?’ What are you going to say?”
In 1996, Snoop Dogg released The Doggfather and the album was noticeably different than his previous albums, Doggystyle and Over the Counter.
“I made it a point to put [out] records of joy—me uplifting everybody and nobody dying and everybody living,” the Death Row Records owner added. “Dionne, I hope I became the jewel that you saw when I was the little, dirty rock that was in your house. I hope I’m making you proud.”
