Is Lindsey Vonn Still Competing in the Milan Cortina Games? Here’s What We Know

A torn ACL and a bone bruise will not keep Lindsey Vonn from competing in the Milan Cortina Games, the Alpine ski racer announced today.
Following a crash at the Crans-Montana downhill on Jan. 30, fans have been left questioning whether or not the 41-year-old athlete would be able to participate in the global competition. Following the crash, which required her to be airlifted off the course and transported to the hospital, Vonn provided her fans an initial update on Instagram the same day, which read, in part:
“I crashed today in the Downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee. I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams,” she wrote. “This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback.”
And while Vonn promised her 2.7 million followers on the platform that her “Olympic dream [was] not over” in that Jan. 30 post, she didn’t make a definitive statement regarding the Milan Cortina Games until earlier today, Feb. 3.
Despite her injury, Vonn will compete in the Milan Cortina Games
Today, Vonn shared an update with her fans, and despite having some pretty serious injuries, she still plans to go for the gold.
“After extensive consultations with doctors, intense therapy, physical tests as well as skiing today, I have determined I am capable of competing in the Olympic Downhill on Sunday,” Vonn wrote in part of her caption. “Of course I will still need to do one training run, as is required to race on Sunday, but… I am confident in my body’s ability to perform. Despite my injuries my knee is stable, I do not have swelling and my muscles are firing and reacting as they should. I will obviously be continuing to evaluate with my medical team on a daily basis to make sure we are making smart decisions but I have every intention of competing on Sunday.”
Vonn, who has earned three Olympic medals throughout her career, thanked her fans and loved ones for their unwavering support following last week’s crash. She also shared a remarkable, inspirational sentiment about her ability to persevere through any obstacle life throws her way.
“I know what my chances in these Olympics were before this crash, and even though my chances aren’t the same now, there is still a chance,” Vonn added. “And as long as I have a chance, I will not lose hope. I will not give up! It’s not over yet!”
