Lizzo Dedicates Her ‘Special’ Music Video to ‘Anyone Who Has Ever Felt Unseen’
The music video for Lizzo’s latest single, “Special,” dropped on Feb. 1 and the rapper has a meaningful dedication attached to it.
“Every night on stage I say ‘Thank you for supporting me. For loving me. And when you see someone that looks like me in the Real World, keep that same energy,’” she captioned an old voice note shared with her 13 million Instagram followers the day of the music video’s release. “What good is representation if I’m the only one benefiting? This video is for any one who has felt unseen, alone, disrespected. I see you.”
The rapper thanked Christian Breslauer, who she noted shared her vision for the video—a Black superhero who is praised by the public and media, yet when she takes off her costume, is treated completely differently in the “real world.”
“I’ve been the same since I’ve been driving slow on Bissonnet / Call up anybody I know and they would tell you that,” the 34-year-old sings. “Fame is pretty new but I’ve been used to people judging me / That’s why I move the way I move and why I’m so in love with me.”
In the voice note, which details Lizzo’s ideas for the music video, she mentioned the goal is that the public “sees” and “appreciates” her for who she is, superhero and ordinary woman.
“And at the end, I hang up my superman outfit,” she finished in the voice note. “I ain’t saving the world anymore, I’m saving myself.”
“Special” is the title track from the singer’s fourth studio album, which was released last July. The 12-track album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Special is nominated for Album of the Year at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, which take place on Sunday. “About Damn Time,” the hit single that preceded the album release and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, is nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
