Lizzo Preaches Self-Love During Acceptance Speech for Record of the Year Grammy
Lizzo took home the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for her hit “About Damn Time” at Sunday night’s star-studded 65th annual ceremony in Los Angeles.
The “Special” singer looked visibly shocked when Coldplay’s Chris Martin announced her win, but quickly composed herself and gave an empowering acceptance speech. After taking the stage, Lizzo began by recognizing fellow nominee Adele and dedicated her award to the late Prince.
“This is an amazing night, this is so unexpected... I want to dedicate this award to Prince. When we lost Prince, I decided to dedicate my life to making positive music... and this was at a time when positive music and feel-good music wasn’t mainstream at that point, and I felt very misunderstood,” she said. “I felt on the outside looking in, but I stayed true to myself because I wanted to make the world a better place, so I had to be that change to make the world a better place. And now, I look around and there’s all these songs that are about loving our bodies and feeling comfortable in our skin and feeling f------ good and I’m just so proud to be a part of it.”
The four-time Grammy Award winner went on to share an inspiring message with her fans while thanking them for their support.
“Anybody at home who feels misunderstood or on the outside looking in like I did, just stay true to yourself because I promise you, you will find people, you will attract people, in your life who believe in you and support you,” she offered.
In addition to shouting out her producers and team, Lizzo thanked her family and her boyfriend, Myke Wright, before issuing a special note of gratitude to 32-time Grammy winner Beyoncé.
“In the fifth grade, I skipped school to see you perform... you changed my life,” she shared. “You sang that gospel medley, and the way you made me feel, I was like, ‘I want to make people feel that way with my music,’ so thank you so much.”
