Nneka Ogwumike Announces She Will Be Joining Skylar Diggins-Smith and Heading to the Seattle Storm
After 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, Nneka Ogwumike is on the move. On Jan. 24, the 33-year-old power forward announced via social media that she would be leaving the team ahead of the 2024 season.
At the time, it wasn’t clear where she would land. According to an article published by the Chicago Sun-Times, her sister Chiney Ogwumike, who plays for the Sparks, revealed that her older sister had narrowed her potential landing places to the Seattle Storm, Chicago Sky and New York Liberty.
After a few weeks of speculation, though, the announcement has been made: Ogwumike is headed to the Storm. The news, which she shared in an Instagram post on Feb. 5, comes only a few days after Skylar Diggins-Smith, former Phoenix Mercury point guard, announced that she will also be heading to the Storm ahead of the 2024 season.
“It’s the #PNnW ⛈️,” Ogwumike captioned the fierce photo that she shared of herself in a green-and-yellow Storm uniform, as she stood in front of a stormy backdrop. The graphic read “Queen of the Nnorthwest,” a creative play on her name.
“Welcome to the Pacific Nnorthwest!” the official account of the Storm wrote in the comment section.
“STORM MOVING NORTHWEST,” Chiney added.
“TUH! 🤞🏽,” Diggins-Smith stated.
With the addition of both Diggins-Smith and Ogwumike, the 2024 Seattle squad is shaping up nicely. The team’s season will kick off at home in mid-May.
