Photographer Laretta Houston Shares Stunning Throwback to Tyra Banks’s Iconic SI Swimsuit Cover
There are only a handful of SI Swimsuit covers that are as iconic as Tyra Banks’s in 2019. The supermodel was captured by Laretta Houston, who made history with the magazine that year alongside Josie Clough when they became the first female photographers to capture an SI Swimsuit Issue cover.
Houston shared a throwback on Instagram with the gorgeous cover of the actress in an itty bitty yellow bikini.
“2019 around this time with Tyra,” she wrote. “Dreams do come true. It’s all about timing!”
The Life Size star’s return to the magazine was particularly memorable because she practically broke the internet when she came out of retirement for the feature. Banks made her debut with the magazine in 1993 and was featured a total of seven separate years, including ’19 in Great Exuma, Bahamas. She landed her first cover in 1996 and again in ’97.
Houston had no idea that the former Victoria’s Secret model was going to be on set that day. She headed up to editor in chief MJ Day’s villa thinking they were going to plan some logistics. Instead, the SI Swimsuit team surprised Houston with the news.
“I was in a bit of shock,” Houston recalled. “And then I happened to look at everybody and I cried because it was a moment in my life that I didn’t think I was able to get. A lot of people dream of things that they want to do, but some of them are unattainable and I actually attained it.”
