Selena Gomez Reveals What Pushed Her to Confront Unrealistic Beauty Standards
As the founder of Rare Beauty, Selena Gomez has a vested interest in the beauty space. But her dedication is more motivated by personal experience (and less by business) than you might think. She founded the brand in 2019, launching a line of beauty products “made to feel good in, without hiding what makes you unique,” according to the website.
Rare Beauty’s latest line speaks to that. She just launched a series of body care products which are, “all about emphasizing well-being,” Gomez said in a recent interview with People. More than anything, the latest drop is perfectly aligned with her mission as Rare Beauty’s founder: to highlight, rather than mask, the rare qualities that exist in each person.
Gomez’s beauty philosophy—the one on which she built her company and tirelessly formulated and perfected each of the products they sell—is “that everyone possesses a unique and rare quality, and feeling beautiful doesn’t require conforming to one specific look,” she told People.
Its a mission committed to confronting unrealistic beauty standards. Its a mission, too, that was motivated by personal experience. The actress and entrepreneur felt “pressure to meet certain appearance expectations growing up, which made me want to challenge the unrealistic standards of perfection in the beauty industry,” she admitted to the outlet. “With Rare Beauty, I get to use beauty and makeup to break down these ideals. I’m focused on creating positive conversations about mental health and self-acceptance. I want to play a part in breaking the stigma around mental health and mental illness, making these discussions more open and accepted.”
Rare Beauty’s comfort-forward body products—built on the same principles—are coming to the website soon.
