Only a couple of years ago, the first of the year might have meant a return to tennis for former professional tennis player Serena Williams. But this year, following the birth of her second child in late summer, early January signaled a tropical trip and quality time with with her family of four.

The pro athlete and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, 40, took their children on a trip to paradise to ring in the New Year—and they made the most of the experience, too. In an Instagram post that Williams shared to her account on New Year’s Day, the 42-year-old and her husband enjoyed a variety of water activities with their oldest child, Olympia.

The first couple of slides featured a clip and photo of the trio taking on the ocean waves on a bright red tube. The rest of the carousel included photos of the family dressed in pirate outfits and posing on board a boat.

“Yea we doing the unexpected for 2024… keep em guessing,” Williams fittingly wrote in the caption of the post.

“Hahaha you look terrified on that raft 😍😍😍,” one follower laughingly noted in the comments.

”Love this so much ❤️✨ Happy new year Serena 🫶🏻,” another sweetly added.

A tropical New Year celebration is definitely an unexpected move for the legend, who—as we mentioned—in years past would likely have been embarking on early season play right about now. But though it certainly looks different, we’re excited to see what other adventures she has in store.
