SI Swimsuit Editor in Chief MJ Day Shares the ‘Trilogy of Life’
SI Swimsuit editor in chief MJ Day is at the helm of a changemaking brand that’s become a true trailblazer in the modeling and media industries. The magazine has, for decades, been a launchpad for models while increasing diversity and inclusion and redefining typical beauty standards.
Day is known for constantly sharing valuable advice and tidbits of knowledge she has picked up throughout her career. Models see her as more than just a mentor, but a true cheerleader and lifelong friend. She opened up about her personal “trilogy of life,” during SI Swimsuit’s “Be You Women’s Empowerment Series” panel, presented by Maybelline, at the University of Central Florida.
“If you’re gonna take away three things today, it’s that failure is not bad, perfection doesn’t exist, and if you want it, keep going for it,” she said during the Sept. 28 event hosted by the magazine and the Big 12. “There’s no limit to what you can [accomplish] and when you can succeed. Remember that. Tattoo that somewhere in the brain, because it’s important.”
SI Swimsuit, which celebrates its 60th anniversary next year, launched the Pay With Change initiative in 2022, and made a commitment to only feature brands that help drive gender equality forward in the annual issue.
“I truly do believe that we have a responsibility and we have the ability to be both a business and use our power for the power of good,” said Day. “I think we not only liberated ourselves but liberated future generations of women to see themselves differently, to behave differently as a brand. Nothing a brand says matters unless it’s backed by action.”
