Selena Gomez Remembers Nick Jonas Romance: ‘We Didn’t Know What We Were Doing’

Selena Gomez is living proof that just because a relationship doesn’t work out, it doesn't mean it wasn’t worth it—especially if you get a lifelong bestie out of it.
The pop sensation was featured on the Therapuss With Jake Shane podcast this Wednesday, where she chatted about everything from her recent 33rd birthday dinner to her fiancé Benny Blanco to her Rare Beauty brand to her past high-profile relationships.
One particular relationship she opened up about was her time with Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. The pair dated briefly back in 2008, but their partnership had a somewhat surprising outcome, as it led to her lifelong friendship with the one and only Taylor Swift.
After Gomez quoted a Swift song lyric mid-interview, Shane asked the artist how she and the superstar met back in the day, to which Gomez humorously responded, “Oh, Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers!” After some giggling, Gomez clarified, adding, “I dated Nick, and she dated Joe. And everything’s like...it’s cute, you know? We were, like, young. We all know and love each other now, and it’s so cute.”
“We didn’t know what we were doing,” Gomez continued. “But yeah, she and I like to say that the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other.”
The artist then went on to chat a little more about how her sweet friendship with Swift formed, noting that The Eras Tour singer was about 18 years old when they met, while Gomez was only 15. Per the interview, Swift’s hit single “Love Story” was the first song Swift ever played for Gomez, who got a chance to hear it before it was officially released after Swift played it for her in a hotel room.
“It was one of those songs I instantly heard and thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever,’” Gomez recalled. “So at that age, we became best friends, bonded over the breakup—as girls do—and then we, I don’t know, just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after.”
Overall, 2025 has been an incredible year for Gomez, as the multi-hyphenate continues to dominate pop culture thanks to her and Blanco’s fantastic collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, as well as her continued role on the popular TV comedy Only Murders in the Building. The series took home two SAG Awards at the 2025 ceremony, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for her co-star Martin Short.
As for what’s next for Gomez, Only Murders in the Building is prepping for the release of its fifth season, which is slated to stream its first three episodes on Hulu beginning Sept. 9, with each subsequent new episode releasing weekly on Tuesdays, per The Hollywood Reporter.
