If you’ve ever wanted to pick Taylor Swift’s brain on her favorite pieces of work from her 12-album discography, Stephen Colbert’s got you covered. On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the 14-time Grammy Award winner headed to The Late Show and its host posed an intriguing query: “May I ask you, Taylor Swift, what are Taylor Swift’s top five Taylor Swift songs?”

The artist took a breath before telling Colbert, “This is so much pressure,” and disclosed that she’ll “need a little time” before revealing the entire top five list.

“I think I require a little bit of time to, like, appreciate my work in a way, and it’s constantly changing, right?” Swift continued. Her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, debuted just over two months ago on Oct. 3.

“It’s a little too soon, but I will say, I think number one is ‘All Too Well’, the 10-minute version,” the artist proclaimed as the studio audience roared in support of her choice.

Originally, “All Too Well” appeared on Swift’s 2012 album Red. Nearly a decade later, the artist released Red: Taylor’s Version—a re-recorded track list featuring nine unreleased “From The Vault” songs. “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” rounded out the album as its 30th title, coupled with a short film starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien.

“I’m really obsessed with The Life of a Showgirl right now, the whole album,” Swift continued. “So I’m like, I can’t really do any of the others. Except, I will say, somewhere in this list, I think, is gonna be a song called ‘mirrorball’ from the folklore album.” She debuted her eighth album in June 2020.

And while Swift did not disclose the final three tunes that round out her list, she was open to circling back on the conversation with Colbert in the future. The artist suggested, “We could do an update at some point, if I have some time to, like, look back and be like, ‘No, this is the top five.’”

Colbert’s response, however, prompted some fans on social media to search for answers. The host declared, “You’ve got all the time you need between now and May”. After the series shared the conversation on Instagram, commenters on the reel shared a similar question.

“WAIT WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MAY????” one user asked. “What’s happening in May???” another fan echoed. The assumed answer to this question is that May will air the final season of The Late Show on CBS, which Colbert revealed on-air on July 17.
