Doja Cat Is Almost Unrecognizable for New 1980s-Style Album Cover

A face card like Doja Cat’s can transcend time, embodying an unbeatable ferocity that would turn heads in any decade—in other words, the artist knows her power. Perhaps that’s why she went full-on Angela Bassett from Waiting to Exhale for the alternate cover of her upcoming album.
How to achieve the Bernadine Harris look? In Doja Cat’s case, a dramatic coat was the place to start. The “Juicy” rapper donned a light gray oversized wrap jacket that was absolutely to die for. A large belt tied around her waist to give her that cinched look, while the gold buckle at the end of the belt gave the entire ensemble an extra pop of color. Underneath her jacket was a light gray turtleneck mini dress of the same pigment.
Another requirement to bring vintage glam to the digital age was a classic hairstyle, and the artist nailed this with her medium-length black hair styled in a way that was both voluminous and captivating. Paired with a bold red lip to match the fiery red car she rested upon, the glam was simply unbeatable.
And, of course, an album cover this stunning needs equally stunning music to back it up!
Doja Cat recently sat down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to discuss her upcoming album, Vie. With Lowe, she explained how this title was birthed from an exciting collaboration between herself, Jack Antonoff and an unnamed person who has yet to be revealed. The three came together to create something powerful yet playful, which is why she felt she could explore all facets of herself and her sound with this particular project.
“I’m working with Jack Antonoff and working with a person that’s new in my life,” she said, per Billboard. “And so it’s the grappling with talking about something personal and creating something fresh, and then getting to know someone new, and then all of these things fell together really naturally.”
She later added, “He’s just been such a wonderful person to work with. But yeah, I think it’s just been nice to play. I really played through the whole thing [...] I think what I wanted to do was play with my voice in ways that are a little bit less unconventional. And so I’m shrieking a little bit on this album, and that’s been a lot of fun.”
The 29-year-old drew from her personal experiences of being in a relationship and everything that comes with it to be her guiding light. The passion. The joy. The anger. The jealousy. All the emotions anyone feels when finding someone who means the world to them are captured in this body of work. But, in true Doja Cat fashion, this is just scraping the top of the iceberg.
“There’s other things outside of myself that were inspiring me to write about these things,” she expressed. “I had been in relationships that made me think about things in a different way, and I think naivety is a big part of this album too. I speak about rushing and love-bombing in a way. I think sometimes people don’t know that they’re doing it, or they do, but giving excessive compliments and gifts right off the bat, that sort of thing. I thought that was a really fun thing to write about.”
What she’s cooking up is bound to be something fantastic—all the more reason why fans can’t wait to get their hands on Vie.
