Doja Cat Drags Sydney Sweeney’s Jeans Ad Amid Controversy

Doja Cat has all but made her opinion known on the controversy surrounding Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad in the form of a viral TikTok.
The “Need to Know” rapper took to her account this week to post a video referencing Sweeney’s now-infamous American Eagle ad by acting out the script word for word with a Southern drawl. This style of video has become a trend, with others on the app following suit and using comical voices to emulate the breathy delivery of the Euphoria actress in the original ad.

So far, reactions to the controversy have ranged from those who don’t see anything wrong with the ad, those who’d prefer to poke fun at the ad and those who are genuinely concerned about what the actress and the fashion company are insinuating with their choice of words, visuals and themes.
Being that blonde hair, a slim figure and blue eyes make up the 27-year-old’s physical appearance, it’s easy to see how people have been taken aback by the implication that this is the ideal look that everyone should strive to achieve. What’s more, the logline of Sweeney’s commercial—“Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”—being a play on the word “genes” has also sparked a conversation surrounding eugenics and the dangers that could potentially follow by using those terms so flippantly.
Another aspect of the ad leaving a sour taste in people’s mouths is the concern that the commercial could be a nod to Brook Shields’s immensely inappropriate Calvin Klein campaign. Shields was only 15 years old when she filmed the ad, which had many mature themes. The 1980 video resulted in public outrage, with viewers infuriated by the portrayal of the minor.
“I was away when they came out, and then I started hearing that the commercials were being banned. The paparazzi would scream at me and my mother, ‘How could you!’ It just struck me as so ridiculous,” Shields told Vogue while looking back at the campaign in 2021.
Shields added, “I didn’t think it was about underwear or sexual in nature. I was naive. I think the assumption was that I was much more savvy than I ever really was. I was a virgin, and I was a virgin forever after that.”
As of now, neither Sweeney nor American Eagle has released an official statement regarding the controversy. However, it has been reported that the brand silently removed several additional advertisements from its official accounts. In the same breath, American Eagle has a handful of other Sweeney content still available to watch, making it unclear exactly how the brand is handling the fallout.
