Lizzo donning a red-hot one-piece swimsuit nearly set Instagram on fire this week.

The “About Damn Time” singer’s latest swimwear snapshots featured her wearing a shimmery red swimsuit similar to the iconic ones worn in Baywatch. But, rather than running in slow-motion to save the lives of beachgoers, she’s serving face with her long platinum blonde tresses and soft glam makeup. The only thing that could’ve made this poolside look better was a glittering gold chain—hence why she chose that very accessory to tie everything together.

Paired with the photos was a caption that honored Lizzo’s ancestry as a Black woman on Juneteenth—the day that recognizes the ending of slavery in the United States—which means a great deal to her, as it’s a way for her to feel connected with those who came before her.

Lizzo champions the fight for a hopeful future for the Black community not only by having Black pride, but also by ensuring she’s making music that speaks to and connects with Black listeners specifically.

“The thing is, when a Black artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s going to be a predominantly white crowd,” Lizzo told Vanity Fair back in 2022. “This has happened to so many Black artists: Diana Ross, Whitney, Beyoncé [...] rap artists now, those audiences are overwhelmingly white. I am not making music for white people.”

“I am a Black woman, I am making music from my Black experience for me to heal myself [from] the experience we call life [...],” she added. “So am I making music for that girl right there who looks like me, who grew up in a city where she was underappreciated and picked on and made to feel unbeautiful? Yes. It blows my mind when people say I’m not making music from a Black perspective—how could I not do that as a Black artist?”

She also continued to spread her message by taking to social media to call out how Black women are pushed into one category in the music industry, and often don’t receive their flowers until after their prime, calling to mind several beloved Black artists who she believes deserve more credit.

“I think seeing and hearing a Black woman make real music with radical joy triggers miserable people,” the 37-year-old star wrote on social media. “But I follow in the footsteps of Janet [Jackson], of Funkadelic, of Earth Wind and Fire… nobody’s doing it like me for Us. And I stand on that.”

And through telling her own story as a Black woman, Lizzo also aims to tell the story of her ancestors, adding, “God put me here to share my story and that story is how a fat Black woman WINS ♥️.”
