Ice Spice Divulges What Taylor Swift Taught Her About Songwriting
Ice Spice and Taylor Swift have become close friends after the “Boys A Liar” rapper was tapped to be featured on a remix of Midnights’s “Karma.” The two even performed the upbeat pop hit on stage during “Eras Tour” shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey last May. The updated version of the song debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“I started crying when I heard [Taylor wanted to collaborate,]” Spice, who is a Billboard 2024 Women in Music Hitmaker honoree, recalled. “I was like, ’No, you’re lying. That’s not real!’ I was so emotional. It was like tears of joy, of course. But, just grateful—iconic.”
The 34-year-old singer also brought the 24-year-old (along with longtime bff Blake Lively) to join her in her suite at Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl LVIII—and cheer on boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs, of course.
Spice, who received four nominations at the Grammy Awards this year, is set to open for a part of Doja Cat’s “Scarlet” tour as well as take the stage at the Coachella music festival next month. The “Barbie World” rapper opened up about what she has learned from watching Swift work her songwriting magic.
“When I was in the studio with Taylor, like, I’ll never forget that,” she shared. “She told me, ’No matter what, just keep making music, and everything’s going to be fine.’”
The love and respect for each other’s craft is totally mutual—in an interview with Spotify, Swift revealed she had been listening to Spice while getting ready for tour for months, so working with her was just a “natural thing.”
Swift’s team reached out after they learned that the New York native was a lifelong fan of the 14-time Grammy Award-winner, and the rest is history.
“She jumped in head first, and getting to know her has been so special. I’m blown away by her. In my opinion, she is the one to watch,” the “You Belong With Me” singer gushed. “Just watching her work ethics, and how thoughtfully she approaches her career … she’s like my new favorite artist.”
