Nina Agdal marked her 31st birthday on March 26 with a candid conversation with SI Swimsuit about all things modeling. She reflected on her past decade in the industry, her experience with the magazine and teased what’s next for her fitness and lifestyle brand, The Agdal Method.

Agdal made her SI Swimsuit debut in 2012 and was featured in the magazine for six consecutive years. In 2014, she landed the iconic 50th Anniversary cover alongside Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen.

She recently returned to the franchise for an exclusive photo shoot with SI Swimsuit photographer Josie Clough, who made history with Laretta Houston as the first female SI Swimsuit photographers to capture a cover image in 2019.

“It felt like I was shooting with someone who had known me for a while and understood my strengths,” Agdal said about working with Clough for the first time. “It’s always great to see talented women come together to create some fantastic work. We couldn’t be more thrilled to share the stunning results.”

Clough, who says the mission of her photography is to “empower women to be their most authentic selves” tried to incorporate Agdal’s personality in each individual snap. The shoot took place in Western Australia in the early morning to take advantage of the soft light.

“Sports Illustrated Swimsuit and MJ Day [editor in chief] were the ones to put my name on the map, and that helped me pursue my modeling career in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without them,” Agdal said, noting that the 50th Anniversary Issue cover will always be a top-three career moment for her. “Some of my best memories are from the early, early mornings and shoot days with the SI crew.”

She created The Agdal Method in March 2020. After trying myriad workout classes and spending years nailing a fitness routine that was effective, sustainable and enjoyable, she decided to combine her favorite moves and exercises to create one daily full-body workout. Agdal is in the process of relaunching the brand on a new platform to make it more accessible and user-friendly. She also wants to better utilize her health coaching certificate by including more mental health tips as well as nutritional advice.

As she enters her 30s, Agdal hopes to continue stepping out of her comfort zone and trying new things.

“I wish I had been more aware of the fact that my job is not my identity. As a young girl in the modeling industry, it’s really easy to get caught up in bad cycles of physically and mentally feeling objectified. I would have been better at saying ’no’ and putting my foot down even to the big guns,” she said. “I think sometimes it’s easy to feel stuck and scared to start something new, but most of the time that’s when you have to challenge yourself. I would love to start a family within the next decade, too. Who knows what will happen, but I am so excited to see how it all unfolds.”
