Having finalized her divorce a little less than two years ago (in March of 2022) following lengthy and contentious disputes with now ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson is now beginning to open up about the relationship.

Recent episodes of her namesake program, The Kelly Clarkson Show, as well as a new interview with People have given the pop singer a platform to discuss where she stands with the divorce and future relationships.

In a conversation with actress Shannen Doherty, Clarkson admitted that, while she’s open to the possibility of future relationships, she’s not quite ready to date again. But dating likely won’t lead to marriage for the 41-year-old. According to People, marriage was never something she was looking for, even with Blackstock.

“No. I never wanted to get married the first time,” she told the magazine. “[Brandon] had children, a religious background, and it was important, I think, for him. But I’ve never been that person. Because I’ve been through a couple divorces in my family, I just don’t like to put any weight on it. It can happen; it doesn’t have to happen. For my kids, I definitely would never even think about it until they’re out of my house.”

Though she has no intention to pursue a relationship anytime soon, Clarkson doesn’t seem to be looking forward to that period when she’s ready to date, either. “Dating sucks. It’s so awkward,” she told People. “I was single until I was, like, 30, and I forgot how really good at that I am.”
