Model and influencer Ellie Thumann has built a career on being transparent and honest with her massive online following. So, it should come as no surprise that the 2023 SI Swimsuit rookie opened up about her emotional well-being during SI Swimsuit’s “Be You Women’s Empowerment Series,” presented by Maybelline, at the University of Cincinnati on Sept. 21.

While Thumman is a regular at high-fashion events and traveled to Puerto Rico for her SI Swimsuit photoshoot, she’s just like the rest of us when it comes to prioritizing her mental health. During the panel discussion with fellow brand stars Christen Harper and Sixtine, she reiterated that reading and getting enough sleep are key to her emotional well-being. The 21-year-old also shared a few tactics she regularly uses to eliminate stress.

Listen to country music and cook

“I find cooking really, really enjoyable for myself,” Thumann shares of one of her go-to methods to de-stress. “I’ll just put on my Amazon Echo... I love country [music], and so I'll play that, I'll make a recipe.”

The model, who loves Taylor Swift, added that she and her sister, Erin, got really into cooking together during quarantine. They have a routine down where Ellie purchases groceries and prepares the meals while Erin is in charge of clean up. The two enjoy pulling recipes from a family cookbook that their mother made for them.

(Pretend) online shop

When she’s not in the kitchen whipping up a delicious meal, Thumann shares that another unique method she implements to relive stress is to shop online—without ever actually clicking the “check out” button.

“Another thing I do that’s kind of weird sometimes when I’m like, overwhelmed, I’ll randomly go on like, every website to find like, clothes, shoes that I want, everything, I’ll add it to my bag, but like, never do anything with it,” she says of her online perusing habit. “It’s the weirdest thing, but it just like, brings me peace in that moment.”
