Stars Prove That Black Is The Perfect Elevated Neutral on Critics Choice Awards Red Carpet

This solid shade is anything but basic, as evidenced by Ali Larter, Meghann Fahy and others.

If you’ve ever wondered how to elevate an all-black ensemble, you’ve come to the right place, because numerous star-studded attendees at last night’s Critics Choice Awards did just that.

The Jan. 4 event in Santa Monica was full of best dressed guests, and what we’ve noticed is this: celebrities are sticking to the basics. But don't be fooled, as a monochromatic look may be reliable, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. Here’s how some award show attendees put a sophisticated spin on the style.

Tossing her hair into a wispy high bun to display the sleek halter neckline of this shiny, sequined gown, the Sirens actress strutted the carpet in the reflective fabric—which followed her in stride. She finished the look with a tennis bracelet and crystal drop earrings.

Lyonne also repped an sequined number, and paired a long sleeve turtleneck top with flare pants and a leather handbag. She accessorized the two piece—from CELINE, the label shared—with a statement necklace, a handful of rings and circular sunglasses.

Danielle Brooks

Brooks’s sheer moment was ultra-cool and effortlessly chic. The Peacemaker actress donned an off-the-shoulder gown with a fringe hem that graced the carpet as she posed for a few snaps. In addition to her studded choker necklace, she also displayed a metallic silver manicure.

Ali Larter

The paneling on this satin silver gown immediately caught our attention, as Larter repped the garment at the Sunday night soiree. The plunging maxi dress showcased a high slit and the Landman star finished off the ensemble with a pair of open-toed heels and dainty jewelry.

Kaley Cuoco

Cuoco took corpcore styling into the new year with this oversized satin set. The Based on a True Story leading lady donned a SIMKHAI suit, she told her Instagram followers, and also revealed in the Jan. 4 post that her look paid homage to Jennifer Aniston’s red carpet outfit from the Golden Globes in 2002.

Rose Byrne

Byrne hit the red carpet in a scoop neck Valentino gown, which featured a beige bodice that hugged her frame. The If I Had Legs I'd Kick You star completed the look with statement drop earrings, which she exhibited by pulling her hair into an elegant up-do.

Another monochromatic moment that caught our attention: these all-orange looks from Hacks costars Meg Stalter and Paul W. Downs. Read more about their instantly iconic outfits here!
