Hilary Duff is so back. The early 2000s pop artist released five musical projects from 2002 to 2006—Metamorphosis, Santa Claus Lane, Hilary Duff, Most Wanted and Dignity—and stole the hearts of millennials and early Gen Zers in the process. At the same time, the now 38-year-old was the face of Disney’s Lizzie McGuire, which aired from 2001 to 2004 and released its feature film in 2003.

Duff debuted another studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., in August of 2015. Now, 10 years later, the multihyphenate is returning to her roots with a brand new single, “Mature.”

“‘Mature” speaks to my mature self calling my not so mature self on the phone many years ago, and she’s letting her know we landed softly,” the mother of four wrote in an Instagram post to her 27 million followers after the song’s release on Nov. 6. In the reel, the artist shared an 11-second clip of the song’s corresponding music video. “This was a brief time with a lover that left me with so many questions … It felt like a good place to start.”

In the comments section of the post, MTV penned a six-word phrase that encapsulated the enormous response of fans across the internet: “an entire generation will be watching." Fellow commenters couldn’t stop gushing over the star’s return behind the microphone.

“WAKE UP HILARY IS BACK ✨,” one user declared.

“Oh how I’ve missed you!!!” another enthusiast wrote underneath Duff's reel.

“Ahhh, this takes me back to when I was a young girl watching Lizzie McGuire and blasting Metamorphosis nonstrop!!🥹🦋,” a commenter fondly reminisced. “THE FEELS!!!!!”

The single is both nostalgia-inducing and a fresh start, Duff explained in an interview with Vogue that aligned with the release of “Mature.” In the conversation, Duff was questioned about a particular easter egg that concludes the artist’s new video—when Duff releases a singular butterfly from her cupped hands into the sky.

“Butterflies hold a lot of strings to my past, and I wanted a nod to that first record being part of my ‘metamorphosis’ to this stage of my career,” Duff elaborated in the interview on her decision to finish the video with the sentimental scene. “They feel very similar in ways, because they both represented new beginnings for me.”

We, like her fans, are more than ready to see what is on the horizon for the artist.
