The long-awaited day has finally arrived. For months, Taylor Swift fans have been speculating about what her next big music announcement would be. Her recent outfit choices and other Easter eggs (or clues regarding her discography) had Swifties convinced that she was preparing to announce a rerecording of Reputation, her sixth studio album.

But at the 2024 Grammy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Feb. 4, the pop sensation had a different plan. Much as she tends to do, she shocked her whole fanbase with the announcement of a new album, The Tortured Poet’s Department. Swift made the announcement when she took the stage to accept her 13th Grammy Award, this time for Best Pop Vocal Album.

The 34-year-old spoke of the impending release as a “thank you” to her fans for their support in her acceptance speech for the award.

“I want to say ‘thank you’ to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way, but I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said during her speech. “So I want to say ‘thank you’ to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years — which is that my brand new album comes out April 19.”

As we said, it was a totally surprising move from the star. But unsurprisingly, her fans are still reeling. Alongside a comical GIF of Swift, a fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) wrote, “me at work today on zero hours of sleep because taylor decided to be unhinged and announce a new album at the grammys.”

“we thought she was going to announce rep tv but instead a whole brand new album like girl,” another voiced their surprise.

“taylor swift understand the importance of a gag like you HAVEEEEE to respect it like hijacking the grammys with an album announcement is so funny,” one fan joked of the power move.

Needless to say, her fans are still reeling from the announcement, and the countdown until April 19 has officially begun.
