Jena Sims doesn’t shy away from the fact that a direct message kickstarted her three-year marriage to her husband, Brooks Koepka. The two-time SI Swimsuit model has been with the professional golfer for over a decade, and on Wednesday, she gave her TikTok followers the inside scoop into the beginning of their budding romance—which, she admits, wasn’t exactly out of a fairytale.

“We did not have, like, the best early days,” Sims, who has a 2-year-old son, Crew, with Koepka, shared in the five-minute video on Nov. 5. Following that DM, the pair originally met in person at the 2015 Masters in the model’s home state of Georgia. However, the spark fizzled. “He still had feelings for his long term, like, college sweetheart girlfriend,” Sims then disclosed, adding,“he got back with that girl, which is great. He had to get that out of his system.”

But Sims didn’t wait around for her future husband. In fact, she said that navigating her 20s on her own is something that she’s grateful for. “Be single in your 20s because that's your time,” she recommended to viewers of the video.

Two years later, when Sims learned that Koepka’s relationship status had changed, she decided to give it another go with the golfer. “I show up to a tournament ... kind of played a little game,” Sims revealed. The model said that she brought along a male friend of hers to the Los Angeles competition, who “actually [later] officiated our wedding, which is hilarious,” she continued.

Unbeknownst to Koepka, this man was in no way romantically involved with Sims. Yet, seeing her at the tournament prompted the professional golfer to make a move. Koepka shot her a text. “We scheduled drinks, and I bailed,” she revealed. “I wanted to drive him crazy.” Sims stated that she gave the golfer “no explanation [because] I knew he was gonna stick around. And he did, and it worked.”

It sure did. A decade later, the duo never fails to swoon over one another. In April, Sims returned to Augusta National Golf Club, with the couple’s son in her arms, to cheer on Koepka’s latest performance at the annual exhibition. The duo repped matching white and green outfits with the athlete’s last name printed on the back.

The following month, the family packed their bags to head to Miami, where Sims walked in her third consecutive SI Swimsuit Runway Show during Swim Week. Thought Crew wasn’t in attendance at the W South Beach for his mom’s appearance in real-time—she cited his bedtime as the reasoning behind his absence—the father-son pair rallied behind Sims during a daytime rehearsal.
