Sydney Sweeney knows style rules are meant to be broken.

Over the weekend, the Emmy-nominated actress made an elegant appearance at the Hamptons International Film Festival, where she accepted the Achievement in Acting Award for her upcoming film Christy. But beyond the cinematic milestone, all eyes were on her all white ensemble—despite it being well beyond Labor Day.

Fashion faux pas? Not when you’re Sydney Sweeney.

Styling

Styled by her longtime creative partner Molly Dickson, the 28-year-old stunned in a vintage 1990s Thierry Mugler tutu dress featuring a basque waistline—a silhouette that’s trending this fall for its dramatic, hyper-feminine structure. The crisp white strapless ensemble offered balletcore romance with a tailored twist, and she paired it with sharp pointed-toe Jimmy Choo Lotta pumps for an ultra-polished finish.

“Thank you @hamptonsfilm for the achievement in acting award for @christy.movie 🥹❤️,” Sweeney captioned her Instagram recap.

What is a basque waist?

A basque waist is a type of waistline that dips below the natural waist and forms a V- or U-shaped point at the front (and sometimes the back) of a garment. Often seen in dresses, corsets and bodices, it creates a flattering hourglass silhouette by elongating the torso and accentuating the waist.

The style is especially popular in bridal gowns, eveningwear and historical-inspired fashion, and is known for its romantic, sculpting effect. Basque waists were first popularized during the Victorian and Edwardian eras and later revived in 1990s couture by designers like Thierry Mugler and Vivienne Westwood, who continue to embrace the dramatic silhouette today.

The term “basque” comes from the traditional clothing of the Basque region, located between France and Spain, where such structured tailoring was a hallmark of regional dress.

Glam

The Euphoria star’s makeup, courtesy of Donni Davy, was fresh, radiant and effortlessly feminine. A luminous base paired with a champagne-toned highlight gave her skin a natural glow, while glittery eyeshadow brought a soft shimmer to her lids. Feathered brows and fluttery lashes framed her signature icy blue eyes, and a hint of blush with glossy berry lips pulled the entire glam look together.

Hairstylist Glen Oropeza styled the White Lotus alum’s long blonde locks into soft, mermaid-inspired waves that cascaded down her back. The sculpted yet natural texture added a sultry, undone vibe to the ethereal look, balancing elegance with ease. The extra length and volume brought a romantic, fairy-tale energy that perfectly complemented her delicate, dreamy outfit.

A knockout performance in Christy

The film—set for release on Nov. 7—follows the true story of Christy Martin, a trailblazing boxer who shattered glass ceilings in the male-dominated world of professional fighting. Directed by David Michôd, Christy also stars Kit Connor, Ben Foster, Merritt Wever and Katy O’Brian.

“I was blown away that her story wasn’t more known on a universal, global level because it’s just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair.

To prepare for the role, the Washington native trained rigorously for over three months. “I had a boxing coach, weight trainers and a nutritionist. I trained three times a day, every day—even while filming,” she revealed. “I felt very strong and powerful. I loved it.”
