When she stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday, March 3, singer-actress Hilary Duff chatted with the daytime talk show host about everything from motherhood to her career trajectory.

The 38-year-old star, who released her first studio album in more than 10 years, luck ... or something, on Feb. 20, revealed that after wrapping Lizzie McGuire, her most famous role to date, releasing pop music was the next goal to check off her bucket list—and for a very specific reason.

“I think that was why I wanted to be a pop star,” Duff told Barrymore. “You know, the second I finished filming Lizzie, I was like, ‘Cool, I don’t want to be called that anymore.’ And I’m gonna make music, and I’m gonna get a record deal and I’m gonna be a pop star.”

While Lizzie McGuire ran on the Disney Channel through 2004, the show’s production ended two years earlier. Duff’s first major studio album, Metamorphosis, dropped in August 2003 when she was 15. Prior to last month’s album, the 38-year-old mom of four’s last full-length project, Breathe In. Breathe Out., was released in June 2015.

Clearly, Duff wanted to distinguish herself from her role on the popular television series through her music, and she did just that. Metamorphosis went quadruple-platinum, while Duff’s latest album is connecting with fans who have been eagerly awaiting new music from the star for more than a decade.

The Younger star’s husband, fellow musician Matthew Koma, served as producer on luck .... or something, and she has spoken with outlets like Interview Magazine about how special it was to collaborate with her partner on the long-awaited project.

“ ... The fact that he’s insanely talented. I wasn’t interested in making a record with anyone else. I was like, ‘It has to just be me and you,’” she stated in conversation with Dakota Fanning. “The most honest stuff came from that because he has a front row to my life and everything I’ve experienced, the really difficult times and the really easy good times that made me who I am.”

Duff and Koma have been married since December 21, 2019. The pair tied the knot in the backyard of their Los Angeles home after getting engaged in May 2019. They share three children together: daughters Banks, Mae and Townes. Duff is also mom to a son named Luca, whom she welcomed with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie, in 2012.
